Index-Number Tests and the Common-Scaling Social Cost-of-Living Index1
نویسندگان
چکیده
For a change in prices, the common-scaling social cost-of-living index is the equal scaling of each individual’s expenditure level needed to restore the level of social welfare to its prechange value. This index does not, in general, satisfy two standard index-number tests. The reversal test requires the index value for the reverse change to be the reciprocal of the original index. And the circular test requires the product of index values for successive price changes to be equal to the index value for the whole change. We show that both tests are satisfied if and only if the Bergson-Samuelson indirect social-welfare function is homothetic in prices, a condition which does not require individual preferences to be homothetic. If individual preferences are homothetic, however, stronger conditions on the Bergson-Samuelson indirect must be satisfied. Given these results, we ask whether the restrictions are empirically reasonable and find, in the case that individual preferences are not homothetic, that they make little difference to estimates of the index. متن کاملThe Common-Scaling Social Cost-of-Living Index
If preferences or budgets are heterogeneous across people (as they clearly are), then individual costof-living indices are also heterogeneous. Thus, any social cost-of-living index faces an aggregation problem. In this paper, we provide a solution to this problem which we call a common-scalingsocial cost-of-living index (CS-SCOLI). In addition, we describe nonparametric methods for estimating...
متن کاملSocial accounting matrix and the effects of economic reform on health price index and household expenditures: Evidence from Iran
Background: Socioeconomic indicators are the main factors that affect health outcome. Health price index (HPI) and households living costs (HLC) are affected by economic reform. This study aimed at examining the effect of subsidy targeting plan (STP) on HPI and HLC. Methods: The social accounting matrix was used to study the direct and indirect effects of STP. We chose 11 health r...
متن کاملEstimating Electric Power\'s Equivalent Scale for the Urban Iranian Household
Abstract Household equivalent scale is an index to measure the impact of household demographic characteristics, such as the householder’s age and gender, the number of household members, etc., and plays a significant role in measuring poverty and inequality. By taking into account demographic characteristics differences, this index facilitates the reasonable comparison of households’ welfare,...

Background & Aims of the Study: Corrosion and scaling are the most common problems of water facilities. Corrosion imposes many financial and health loss on system and consumer respectively, scaling also causes clogging and head loss in network. The purpose of this study is to determine the corrosion and scaling potential of water supply sources of Qom villages. Materials &...
